Prices today are unquestionably higher than they were previously. You can expect to pay more for a variety of items, including gaming laptops, due to inflation, shipping congestion, chip shortages, and other global events.

The ASUS TUF Gaming laptop line has always had good mid-range components, and this year’s model improves on that formula by including even more powerful graphics components. The TUF Gaming F15 laptop refresh of 2021 now has an 11th generation Intel Core processor and an Nvidia Geforce RTX 3060, which should be enough to power its 1080p display with a high refresh rate. The new laptop’s design and chassis have also been updated, making it stand out from other gaming laptops.

Prior to this, I had imagined a low-cost gaming laptop that would cost no more than $1,000. For me, $1,200 appears to be the sweet spot in terms of price between budget and midrange. The most affordable model of Acer’s Nitro gaming laptops used to be around $800, but the most recent model is $999, and the entry-level price rises to $1,049. The Acer Nitro 5 gaming laptop that I tested here costs $1,299, which is far out of reach for most people looking for a low-cost gaming laptop. It still has an excellent combination of hardware specs and aesthetics, with a 512GB SSD and an Nvidia 3060 GPU.

Acer Nitro 5 Vs Asus TUF 15: Detailed Analysis

Design

Unlike many other gaming laptops in recent years, the TUF F15’s design isn’t purely gamer-focused. Both the laptop and the keyboard are easy to operate. It’s not as good as my Macbook Air (released in early 2020), but it’s good enough for me to write more than half of this gaming laptop review on it. However, the lack of capacitive touch on the trackpad threw me for a loop because it relies on two physical buttons on the bottom. As a result, dragging and dropping on the touchpad only took up half of my time.

The acre nitro 5 features a 15.6-inch 1,920×1,090 display with a 144Hz refresh rate (the number of times the screen image refreshes per second) and a matte screen. The muted appearance of the display may be due to its non-glossy top surface, but I prefer matte displays in general. Despite the fact that the “144Hz” sticker at the bottom of the screen was crooked, I was irritated. Quality control must have failed at some point during the manufacturing process.

Software

The Nitro line has always been one of my favourites as a 15-inch productivity laptop and a gaming laptop. The Nitro is a more mainstream model than Acer’s Predator-branded Helios and Triton lines. Compare it to Dell’s mainstream G-series gaming laptops and the more specialized Alienware laptops.

The ASUS TUF F15, on the other hand, comes with an 8-core/16-thread Intel Core i9-11900H processor, 16GB of RAM, and an Nvidia Geforce RTX 3060 graphics card.

Among the games we tested were Horizon Zero Dawn, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Watch Dogs Legion, Cyberpunk 2077, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Here’s a look at the 1080p performance of the hardware. Because the vast majority of games support one or both of these technologies, we ran our baseline tests without ray tracing or DLSS. When DLSS and ray tracing was enabled, this is how the games looked and played.

It appears that DLSS isn’t working as well as I expected, as the performance boost is significantly lower than I anticipated. DLSS would not function at all if ray tracing was disabled. We contacted ASUS to confirm our findings, and they confirmed that developer optimizations were to blame.

Gaming

PC manufacturers typically profit from the inclusion of these links and apps. Is the cost of the system reflected in the savings made? It’s difficult to say what’s going on. The good news is that thanks to the 512GB SSD, it doesn’t take up much storage space.

Despite this, I prefer Acer’s Nitro-Sense software for controlling the gaming capabilities of the system. It’s simple enough for inexperienced users to understand and doesn’t clog up the interface with anything other than basic fan speed controls, temperature monitoring, keyboard backlighting, and a few other features. Despite the fact that the fans could be noisy, the system never overheated, and the controls are simple to use.

While Watch Dogs Legion’s benchmarks attributed the strange DLSS performance to “low CPU performance,” that doesn’t sound right. Nonetheless, our independent CPU testing shows that Intel’s mobile core i9 processor can compete with my own Ryzen 7 3700X desktop processor, which is now nearly three years old. Here’s how the mobile processor performed in comparison to my desktop PC, which uses a large 240mm AIO radiator for cooling. When you consider that the cooling capacity of a laptop computer is significantly less than that of a desktop computer, it’s quite impressive. The maximum turbo frequency of the Core i9-11900H is listed as 4.9 GHz, and it came close to hitting that mark in our single-core testing. Its CPU can run all cores at 3.6 GHz, which is more than enough for gaming on all eight cores.

Battery

The Acer Nitro 5’s battery only lasted 4:37 minutes. It is only for watching videos and not for playing games. In recent testing of gaming laptops, such as the HP Victus, we discovered that many of them lasted longer. This isn’t a deal-breaker for gamers, but it limits the Nitro 5’s usefulness as a productivity laptop.

The ASUS TUF F15 is a solid gaming laptop with well-balanced internals and a clear upgrade path that should satisfy most gamers. The Acer Nitro 5 gaming laptop has a Core i5 processor and an Nvidia 3060 GPU. That is, you already know how it will perform before you open the box. Despite the fact that it has an i5 processor rather than an i7, every game benchmark we ran (such as Guardians of the Galaxy at high detail settings) was faster than 60 frames per second in all tests.
