AMD Ryzen 9 5900x VS Intel Core i7 12700k Comparison!

The AMD Ryzen 9 5950X and Intel Core i7 12700k  processors based on the Zen 3 architecture deliver new levels of high-end gaming and application performance while consuming less power than ever before.

The Ryzen 5000 series has finally and completely defeated Intel’s desktop PC dominance. With a total of 32 Stream Processor (SPS) cores, one of AMD’s most powerful new Ryzen 9 5950X chips has arrived in our labs for testing. Ryzen 9 continues to dominate productivity applications, and AMD’s new halo part extends its lead in every other metric, including 1080p gaming performance, to an unexpected extent. This particular 5950X sample even exceeds 5 GHz (at least on occasion), outperforming its spec and making it an easy choice for our list of the best CPUs, all while drastically altering our CPU Benchmark Hierarchy.

Also, we’ve already reviewed the Core i9-12900K and Core i3-12300 processors from Intel’s 12th generation Core processors, which were announced and released nearly a year ago. The focus today is on the middle of the stack, with the Core i7-12700K and Core i5-12600K at the fore.

Since their introduction in 2012, AMD’s Zen 3 architecture and Ryzen 5000 series have put Intel on the back foot in terms of both performance and pricing. This is Intel’s second attempt (following Rocket Lake) to dethrone AMD’s Ryzen 5000 as the best desktop processor for gamers, content creators, and everyone in between. This time, we’ll see if Intel’s Core i7-12700K and Core i5-12600K processors can finally level the playing field in the mid-range and enthusiast markets.

AMD Ryzen 9 5900x VS Intel Core i7 12700k: Detailed Analysis

Specifications

Intel Core i7 12700k

Aside from the Ryzen 9 5950X, the Zen 3 offers a lot more. There is also the Ryzen 9 5900X, which costs $549 and has 12 cores and 24 threads. It outperforms the 5950X and even Intel’s overclocked flagships at 1080p. Regardless of its brutal application performance.

Ryzen’s early success can be attributed in large part to its high core counts, broad compatibility, and numerous freebies for enthusiasts. Despite this, AMD has long been a low-cost substitute.

In our Core i9-12900K review, we discussed the dual architectural hybrid design of Alder Lake, including the differences between the P (performance) and E (efficiency) models (efficiency cores). The P-cores, which incorporate Intel’s high-performance Golden Cove architecture, are capable of delivering excellent single-threaded performance. Because of their smaller size and lower power consumption, Intel is able to pack in the Gracemont-based E-cores for multi-threaded workloads without blowing the chips’ power and thermal budgets.

However, in recent years, Intel’s performance advantages have steadily eroded as AMD’s clockwork execution on new Zen architectures has been introduced. Intel responded by adding more cores and features as AMD’s relentless innovation kept Intel clinging to its single-threaded performance advantage.

AMD switched to the denser 7nm process and Zen 2 architecture with the Ryzen 3000 chips, which reduced Intel’s gaming advantage to insignificance in the mid-range market. AMD has begun to reposition itself as a premium brand as sales have increased. AMD has demonstrated that it is willing to forego some of the freebies we’ve come to expect in order to charge more for its almost imperceptibly faster chips since its recent Ryzen XT lineup.

Intel’s 12th generation Core i7 and i5 series Price and Availability

The Alder Lake Desktop-S line’s Core i9-12900K, Core i7-12700K, and Core i5-12600K processors will be available in November 2021, followed by 22 new processors in early 2022. The 12th generation Core i7 lineup from Intel includes five SKUs, all of which are variations of the 12700 with different clock speeds and TDPs but the same eight P-cores and four E-cores. At the top of the list are the Core i7-12700K and i7-12700KF, which have an unlocked multiplier and can be overclocked with a Z690 motherboard.

Overclocking requires the Core i7-12700F, which is the same as the Core i7-12700 but lacks the integrated Xe graphics. Finally, the Core i7-12700T has a lower base TDP of 35 W, a turbo TDP of 180 W, and a 4.7 GHz P-Core turbo for low-power systems.

In contrast, the Ryzen 5000 completely changes the landscape. AMD has combined the 7nm process with a complete redesign of the Zen core microarchitecture for the Ryzen XT processors for the first time. AMD claims that the new Zen 3 microarchitecture increases instruction per cycle (IPC) throughput by 19 per cent on average, erasing Intel’s performance advantages and delivering a new level of power efficiency.

Even after overclocking, the Ryzen 5000 processors outperform Intel in nearly every important metric. This includes thermals and power consumption. Smart Memory Access, a new feature from AMD, takes advantage of the company’s position as the only CPU manufacturer that also manufactures discrete GPUs. To take advantage of this new technology’s improved data transfer between the CPU and GPU, you’ll need a Radeon RX 6000 card, a Ryzen 5000 processor, and a 500-series motherboard. We’ll know more about this new technology once the Radeon RX 6000 “Big Navi” goes on sale later this month.

The 12th-generation Core i7 series has nine SKUs, which is a lot for the mid-range market. If you don’t mind paying $289 for a top-tier Core i5-12600K processor with an unlocked multiplier and full overclocking support, you can get the same processor for $264.

The Core i5-12600K and i5-12600KF processors from Intel are the only ones in the 12th Generation Core i5 series with hybrid P- and E-Core (Golden Cove and Gracemont) cores. It has 16 threads in total, with six P-cores and four E-cores. The remaining Core i5 stack for Alder Lake is made up of only six P-cores based on Intel’s Golden Cove architecture, with no E-cores.

Only the base and turbo frequencies (as well as the price) distinguish the three Core i5 models: the i5-12600, i5-12500, and i5-12400. That works out to be only $31 per 1000 units. Intel’s T series processors also include the Core i5-12600T, i5-12500T, and i5-12400T, all of which have a 35-watt base TDP and a 117-watt turbo TDP. In addition, the Core i5-12400F has the same specs as the Core i5-12400 but no built-in graphics.

AMD Ryzen 9 5900x VS Intel Core i7 12700k: Final Verdict

When Alder Lake first became available, there were some issues with the Intel Thread Director when running Windows 10. Any scheduling issues with the latest Windows 11 operating system, on the other hand, have been completely eliminated. Intel’s Thread Director works with Alder Lake to assign the appropriate number of P-cores and E-cores to different workloads. JEDEC is also testing the Core i7-12700K and Core i5-12600K with DDR5 memory (DDR5-4800 CL40). Furthermore, we’re running Windows 11, and we’ll keep doing so for the rest of 2022 and into the future when doing CPU and motherboard reviews. Therefore both of them are quite powerful and good.
