One Plus Buds Z2

JBL makes the JBL Tune 230NC TWS, a pair of earbuds that the company hopes will bring JBL’s signature sound to the ears of listeners everywhere, in addition to their rugged Bluetooth speakers. The manufacturer highlights the earbuds’ small size and numerous audio enhancements. When the advertising jargon is removed, they’re very similar to other headphones on the market today.

Or under $100, the OnePlus Buds Z2 are an excellent pair of headphones. Because they are waterproof, dustproof, and noise cancelling, these headphones are ideal for travel. JBL Tune 230 vs One Plus Buds Z2: Detailed Analysis

Design and Build Quality

JBL’s Tune 230NC TWS is one of our favourite small Bluetooth speakers, and the company is well-known for producing high-quality audio equipment. These earbuds weigh only 10 grams and come with three different sizes of silicone ear tips. The large size is ideal for my large ears, but if yours are smaller, you should be fine with the size range provided. With an IPX4 rating, these headphones can withstand light rain, perspiration, and splashes.

However, the OnePlus Buds Z2 can be viewed as a less expensive alternative to OnePlus’s Apple AirPods Pro. The stem on these is 15% shorter than on the original Buds Z, giving them a more competitive look and feel. OnePlus, like Amazon, Beats, and Sony, includes three different-sized ear tips in the box to help you find the perfect fit.

Battery

When fully charged, the JBL Tune 230NC TWS headphones have a 10-hour battery life (when not using the noise-cancelling feature) and 30-hour battery life (when using the feature). When active noise cancellation is used, the battery life of the headphones drops to 8 hours and that of the case drops to 24 hours. These headphones have an annoying feature that plays a tone every 10% of battery life until the battery dies. Not only is there no obvious way to disable this feature, but it is also supported by the app. The charging case is required to charge the headphones. There is a USB-A to USB-C cable, but no charger. The charging case’s hole is precisely cut to fit the shape of the included cable, making it unlikely that any other cable will fit.

During our testing, a single charge lasted 4 hours and 22 minutes with constant playback at 75 dB(SPL) and ANC at full strength. This is comparable to other truly wireless earbuds in this price range. When used with the charging case, the earbuds can play for up to 38 hours with active noise cancellation turned off.

Extreme recharging After only ten minutes of charging time, the earbud case can provide five hours of playtime. Wireless charging is not an option because the case can only be charged via a USB-C cable. The OnePlus Buds Z2’s battery life is expected to decline after a couple of years of regular use, so don’t expect them to last much longer than the two years they are advertised.

Controls

One Plus Buds Z2

JBL Tune 230NC TWS earbuds can be programmed to respond to a single tap, two taps, or a tap and hold sequence. Tap the right earbud once, twice, or three times to select play/pause, forward/backward, or shuffle playback. This works, but only if your taps are precise and concentrated on the tiny upper portion of the earbud. A little practice will most likely be required before you can master it. Normally, the following settings are used:

Connectivity

JBL Tune 230NC TWS works with the JBL Headphones app (iOS and Android) (iOS and Android). It is recommended that you install the app in order to take advantage of the app’s configuration options. You’ll find buttons on the inside that allow you to quickly switch between the Ambient Sound mode, Smart Audio, and Video features. By tapping the gear icon in the top right, you can customize the tap controls for each bud as well as other settings. If you don’t want to hear an extremely loud screech, don’t use the Find My Buds feature on your JBL Tune 230NC TWS.

The OnePlus Buds Z2 can be customized using the HeyMelody app, unlike the One Plus Buds, though features are limited in comparison to other true wireless earbuds. Transparent listening, regular listening, and two levels of active noise cancellation are available. Touch controls are available on both earbuds and can be customized independently.

ANC

The active noise cancellation (ANC) and isolation on the JBL Tune 230NC TWS aren’t great, but you can change how the ANC deals with ambient sounds in the JBL Headphones app to suit your needs. These buds will not be able to muffle every sound while commuting. Because these buds have a tendency to slide out slightly, isolation is difficult. Screeching car horns will reach your ears unless you get a good seal because isolation is how these earbuds block out highs.

However, turning off ANC can be advantageous. It lets in more noise while still allowing you to hear bus stop announcements, for example. TalkThru mode allows you to communicate with others or order a coffee without having to remove your buds (though content must be manually paused) (but you have to manually pause content). If you’re looking for a happy medium, try the Ambient Aware setting. When it comes to noise cancellation, the OnePlus One Plus Buds Z2 is difficult to beat at its price point. At 3kHz, the silicone ear tips should provide a 30dB reduction in background noise. At maximum ANC, for example, the rumble of an aeroplane engine is reduced by 20 dB, making it about a quarter as loud as it would be without the buds.

When passive isolation and ANC are used together, most outside noise is reduced from half as loud (400-650Hz) to one-eighth as loud (2.5-3.5kHz). The OnePlus Buds Z2 is an excellent pair of noise-cancelling wireless earbuds that outperform both the OnePlus Buds Pro and the AirPods Pro.

Sound Quality

Given that JBL and Harman are both owned by the same company, it stands to reason that the two brands would share a frequency response characteristic. Despite the fact that the JBL Tune 230NC emphasizes bass more and mids less than is typical for in-ears, we found that they match our (calculated and unofficial) projected target quite well. While there will always be some noise over a wireless signal, JBL claims that these earbuds deliver “pure bass, zero noise.” That’s most likely a reference to the brand’s background music and the headphones’ active noise cancellation (ANC) technology. If you can ignore the marketing and remember that these aren’t studio monitors, but rather headphones for the commute and the gym, you’ll likely be pleased with what you hear.

The OnePlus Buds Z2’s sound quality is where the premium price tag becomes apparent. The frequency response of the earbuds is typical of low-cost headphones: emphasized lows and highs with muted mids.

My main complaint about these headphones is that there is no way to customize the acoustic profile; instead, you are stuck with the sound they produce right out of the box. Changing the equalization in one streaming app will have no effect on the sound quality in another, so stick with the one you prefer.

JBL Tune 230 vs One Plus Buds Z2: Final Verdict

The Tune 230NC TWS is an excellent companion for anyone who enjoys listening to music while travelling or working out. These earbuds have a noise-cancelling feature that can be adjusted on the fly, making them ideal for situations in which you need to make a phone call while also hearing bus announcements or placing your coffee order. You can wear them while working out because they are water and sweat-resistant. Plus, once you’ve mastered the tap controls, you’ll be able to summon your voice assistant in a flash. On a busy day, this will be extremely useful for checking messages and getting directions.

Despite its appealing features, the Tune 230NC TWS does not provide a particularly comfortable listening experience. Furthermore, it has some odd quirks that detract from the user experience, such as chirping when the battery is less than 50% charged and an unstable charging case. OnePlus, on the other hand, is nothing if not ambitious when it comes to price cuts. The OnePlus Buds Z2 is an excellent purchase because they block out a significant amount of ambient noise, last a long time, and have good microphones.
