Lenovo Yoga 6 Vs MacBook Air M1: Which To Choose?

The MacBook Air with M1 from Apple is a radical departure from what you’d expect from a MacBook Air. In terms of raw power, Apple’s silicon destroys Intel’s CPUs, propelling the MacBook Air to the top of the 13-inch laptop market. As a result, the MacBook Air has entered a new era where it can compete, if not outperform, Intel-based Windows desktop PCs.

I reviewed the Lenovo Yoga 6, one of Lenovo’s most affordable convertibles, late last year and was impressed. It had a quick AMD processor, a fabric-covered lid, and other appealing features. Despite its flaws, I jumped at the opportunity to review its successor.

I’ll compare the new M1 MacBook Air to the best PC laptops as well as the Lenovo Yoga 6 gen.

Price and Availability

The Yoga 6 Gen 7’s official price is $749.99, but it’s already available for less.

Although Lenovo and Best Buy both sell it, not all configurations are always available. Educational institutions, on the other hand, can purchase the MacBook Air with M1 for $899. (opens in new tab). This model has a lot to offer, with an 8-core CPU and a 7-core GPU, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD. The $1,249 model comes with 512GB of SSD storage as well as an 8-core GPU.

MacBook Air M1
  • The Lenovo Yoga 6 has a distinct appearance and feel thanks to its fabric-covered lid.
  • The sides of the base have been completely bent to give it a more modern appearance.
  • Because of the numerous connections available, all of your devices will fit this time.

When I tested the Lenovo Yoga 6 last year, it had one of my favourite designs, but the company went ahead and improved on it. Like the previous generation, the Yoga 6 has a dark blue fabric cover over the laptop’s lid, making it stand out in a sea of metal laptops. Lenovo, on the other hand, has modernized the design, as seen with the Yoga 9i, which we also looked at (and loved).

When compared to the early 2020 model I tested in March, this Macbook Air M1 offers nothing new or revolutionary. Because that is the entire point. The MacBook Air retains the wedge-shaped machined aluminium chassis we’ve come to expect from Apple as if to ease the transition to Apple Silicon.

The WUXGA display on the Lenovo Toga 6 gen has a 16:10 aspect ratio and a higher resolution than the display on the previous generation.

Microsoft has also updated the webcam to make it Windows Hello compatible.

I returned the previous iteration of the Yoga 6 because the display was another issue for me. Even though it was adequate, the 16:9 aspect ratio made it appear too small for my liking. Instead of lecturing its customers, Lenovo actually listened to them. Laptops will increasingly use 16:10 aspect ratio displays starting this year. While the screen is still 13.3 inches in size, the higher aspect ratio has a significant impact on productivity. I like how there is now more to see on the screen.

During my MacBook M1 review, I noted how the graffiti and the arachnid that bit into young Miles Morales, as well as the spider’s greens, popped off the screen as I watched Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse on a MacBook Air M1. The MacBook Air’s 2,560 x 1600-pixel Retina display displayed minute details such as the hairs on that spider, the numerous Ben-Day dots seen in the film, and the grains in the Bong Joon-wood Parasite’s floor. The base models of Ho’s ZenBook 13 and XPS 13 laptops have two 1080p displays.

Lenovo Yoga 6

Almost all of the hardware in the Yoga 6 has been updated, but the interior remains unchanged. Like last year’s model, this year’s Lenovo Yoga 6 Gen 7 is powered by AMD’s Ryzen 5000 series processors. That’s why I’m surprised Lenovo didn’t opt for the upgraded Ryzen 5 5600U with a new architecture.

The M1 processor and 16GB of RAM in the MacBook Air make it a powerful machine. I was able to run 20 Chrome tabs and a 1080p YouTube video simultaneously, as well as Apple’s Mail and Photos apps, Pixelmator (an Intel program), and 1Password (another Intel program) (Intel, again). Oh, and 20GB of 4K video was being AirDropped in the background while all of this was going on.

It scored 5,962 on the Geekbench 5.1 (Intel) multicore test, which was nearly identical to the M1 MacBook Pro’s 5,925. When compared to the ZenBook 13 (5,084) and the XPS 13, the Air scored a whopping 5,319 points higher on Geekbench 5.2. (both with the Intel Core i7-1165G7 CPU and 16GB of RAM). The previous Intel MacBook Air Y-series Intel CPU scored only 2,738 points.

Keyboard and Mousepad

During the 10fastfingers typing test, I averaged 80 words per minute (wpm) on the Magic Keyboard on my MacBook Air. Following criticism that Apple’s Butterfly-switch keys were too shallow and prone to sticking when small debris or dust got into them, the company decided to update this keyboard, as well as the early 2020 MacBook Air.

The fact that this model’s keyboard base has seen the fewest changes from the previous one isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it is intriguing nonetheless. The keyboard on the new Lenovo Yoga 6 is just as enjoyable to use as the one on the previous model. The keys are enjoyable to type on because they travel a reasonable distance and do not abruptly bottom out. Keys always function as expected, and I’ve never experienced any sluggishness with them.

Lenovo Yoga 6 vs MacBook Air M1: Final Verdict

The Lenovo Yoga 6 has fewer flaws than the previous model in this price range, making it an easier recommendation. Buyers of the Lenovo Yoga 6 Gen 7 should keep the following points in mind:

  • You want a laptop that can function as both a laptop and a tablet.
  • You’re looking for a fantastic laptop for school.
  • If this describes you, it’s because you frequently connect a slew of devices to your laptop.

In contrast, the MacBook Air with M1 review demonstrated how the MacBook Air’s remarkable durability and stunning speed work together to propel the MacBook Air to greater heights. If the new MacBook Air had a few more ports and thinner bezels, it would be perfect.
