JBL’s Story

JBL was founded in 1945, one year after James B. Lansing resigned from Altec Lansing as Vice President of Engineering. Lansing Sound, Inc. was founded in 1946 and later changed its name to James B. Lansing Sound. The first two products were the D101 15″ loudspeaker and the D175 high-frequency driver. JBL’s D175 was listed in their catalog until the 1970s. Altec Lansing products were nearly exact replicas in both cases. The D130, a 15-inch transducer, was the first original product, and it was followed by 55 years of variants. The D130 came standard with an Alnico V magnet and a 4-inch flat ribbon wire voice coil. There were also the D131 and D208 cone drivers, each measuring 12 inches in length.

The Marquardt Corporation provided an early manufacturing facility as well as investment. William Thomas, the treasurer of Marquardt Corporation, served on the Lansing Board of Directors. Marquardt took control of the JBL in 1948. General Tire purchased Marquardt in 1949. Following Lansing’s bankruptcy, a new company was formed with no ties to the loudspeaker industry. Lansing renamed his company James B. Lansing, Incorporated, and relocated his operations to 2439 Fletcher Drive in Los Angeles to better reflect his new business status.

JBL’s Northridge line of loudspeakers has become more widely available since then. The Everest and K2 lines of project speakers were released concurrently with their entry into the high-end market. JBL rose to prominence as a tour sound supplier after touring bands and music festivals began to use JBL loudspeakers. JBL products were used to build the THX loudspeaker standard, and as a result, the company has become a household name in the world of cinema sound systems.

Ford used JBL in its top-tier audio systems to compete with Chrysler (which used Infinity) and Nissan (which used JBL) (who used Bose). Toyota is now selling products that include JBL audio systems.
