Sony SRS-xb22 VS JBL Flip 5: Detailed Analysis

Build Quality

Sony SRS-Xb22

The Sony SRS XB22’s build quality is truly one-of-a-kind. Because of its durability and small size, the speaker is unquestionably portable. The speaker is hefty and satisfying to hold in one’s hand. Even though it only weighs 2 pounds, the high-quality durability is almost palpable. Although it lacks the sturdiness of the UE Wonderboom 2, this speaker is still an excellent choice.

The majority of the speaker’s body is made of rubberized plastic, with a fabric-like material on the front for durability. As a result, you won’t have to worry about it collapsing.

Because of its LED lighting, this speaker stands out from the crowd. We only have two lights, but you can turn them on and off at any time. On either side of the center. Unlike Sony’s SRS XB41 speaker, JBL Flip 5 did not have lights that ran the entire length of it.

We can’t tell the Flip 5 apart from its predecessor, which is slightly larger and heavier. In addition to the new racetrack-shaped driver hidden beneath its jacket, the Flip 5 has 20W of amplified power—4W more than the Flip 4—giving you an advantage over the previous generation. According to JBL, the Flip 5 is waterproof to IPX7 standards. If this is the case, it should be waterproof for 30 minutes at one-meter depth. Despite being waterproof, the USB-C charging port is exposed and has not been tested for salt or sand ingress at the beach.

Battery

Sony claims that the battery can last up to 12 hours. The UE Wonderboom 2 has a battery life of 13 hours, which is longer than that of most small portable speakers. We have a USB charger, as previously stated, but it would be preferable if it was USB type C. Don’t let this deter you; there are many other USB-powered speakers on the market. The JBL Flip 4, for example, no longer has an analog aux-in port for wired listening.  JBL, on the other hand, has removed the microphone, which was previously used for voice control and hands-free calls. So, basically, the Flip 5 is a Bluetooth (4.2) speaker with a USB-C charger and cable. Using this port adds 2.5 hours to the charge time from zero to full charge. As a result, despite its larger battery, it charges in an hour less time than the Flip 4. (4800mAh as opposed to 3000mAh).

Connectivity

The Bluetooth version of Sony SRS xb-22 speaker is 4.2, which should be sufficient for the vast majority of users. Because Bluetooth 5.0 is the most recent technology, it outperforms the previous version. Pairing is simple, as it is with any other device. Using the Flip 5, you can easily connect a device to the JBL Flip 4 with Bluetooth 4.2. Press the Bluetooth button on the speaker, and it will appear in the list of devices on your phone or laptop.

If you own a Flip speaker, you can use the JBL Connect app to check its battery life, update its software, and connect it to other speakers in PartyBoost mode. Let us now turn our attention to the most important aspect of this review: the sound quality. I must admit that I was taken aback by what this speaker had to say at first. The speaker can fill small rooms as well as open spaces up to medium size.

JBL Flip 5

The instruments were clearly audible in the midrange in terms of audio quality. They could have used a little more detail in the higher frequencies, but they’re not bad.

Most portable speakers lack a soundstage due to their small size. On the other hand, it has a soundstage with left and right channel audio separation. By pressing the “live sound” button mentioned earlier, you can switch the speaker from extra bass to live sound.

It’s a minor distinction, but it’s still useful to have in your toolbox. Overall, I’m pleased with the sound quality, and I’m impressed by how loud this speaker is considering its small size.

Despite being one of the more difficult genres to select, the JBL Flip 5 manages to keep all musical strands in check, from the manic high hat to an angry bass to Chatten’s vocal, which is given admirable attention, quality, and texture.

Sha Sha Sha demonstrates the Flip 5’s ability to layer and celebrate the material it is given, rather than simply relay it. The guitar solo really shines during the song’s bridge, but it doesn’t overpower the driving bass, which remains present and well-balanced throughout.

The soft piano that precedes Neil Young’s vocals in the 2009 remastered version of “After The Gold Rush” is both three-dimensional and emotive. The award-winning Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 is slightly less expensive, but it lacks the openness, acoustics, and placement that the French horn brings to the mix.

Customer Reviews

Sony SRS-xb22

  • The product is a literal sound bomb.
  • The loudness is as if it was DESIGNED FOR OUTDOOR USE; I conducted extensive research prior to purchasing this piece.
  • Awe-inspiring sound clarity and bass. Enough to fill a one-bedroom apartment and feel the bass. 85% volume is sufficient to blow your mind!
  • High-quality construction. It truly does feel sturdy.
  • . The LEDs are stunning and also strobe in time with the beats of music.

JBL Flip 5

  • The balance of the sound is excellent.
  • Charging time and battery life are both acceptable.
  • Excellent quality charging cable.
  • As opposed to the original JBL Flip 3, the Stealth version of the JBL Flip 3 does not include the JBL connect feature or an integrated microphone. However, it is IPx7-certified (waterproof), whereas the original JBL flip 3 is only IPx5-certified (splashproof).

Sony SRS-xb22 VS JBL Flip 5: Final Verdict

Is the Sony SRS XB22 a good fit for you or the JBL Flip 5 does well? That being said, if you’re looking for a portable speaker that’s waterproof and dustproof, has LED lights, and more, this speaker is a great option. I recommend the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 to those looking for a long-lasting speaker with fewer features. Finally, the new Flip 4 speaker from JBL appears to be a good buy. Although it lacks features such as in-app EQ, an aux-in port, and built-in microphones, as well as being incompatible with older JBL speakers, it is still a good buy if you can live without them.

Even though the Flip 5 lacks bells and whistles, it still does the job. JBL is capable of producing high-quality sound at this level, and that is undeniable.
