Sony Xperia 10 IV Vs Sony Xperia 5 III: Which To Choose?

Although the Xperia 5 III brings the majority of Sony’s best technology to a lower price point, it does so at the expense of a number of desirable features, making it unlikely to be a runaway success.

Sony’s Xperia 5 III is the company’s second flagship device for 2021. Sony’s smaller smartphone is slightly less expensive than the $1,299 Sony Xperia 1 III, but it retains nearly all of Sony’s features. It’s also significantly less expensive than the $1800 Sony Xperia Pro-I, which is primarily intended for photography.

Still, at $999 in the US and £899 in the UK, the Xperia 5 III isn’t the cheapest smartphone on the market. In comparison, the Xperia 5 II from last year is $50 more expensive. The phone will compete in the sub-$1,000 price range with flagship phones from Apple, Google, OnePlus, Samsung, and others. So, keep reading to see if the Sony Xperia 5 III has what it takes to stand out in our full review.

In comparison to the Sony Xperia 1 IV (£1,299), which stands out with its absurdly tall and sharp display, cutting-edge camera system, and exorbitant price, the Sony Xperia 10 IV (£1,299) demonstrates restraint in an elegant mid-range price point. It’s a phone that’s easy to use on a daily basis, but the limitations are a little excessive. Sony may have unexpectedly shifted its focus, as it did with the Xperia 1 IV.

Sony Xperia 10 IV Vs Sony Xperia 5 III: Detailed Analysis

Design and Build Quality

Sony’s deliberately blocky and unadorned design language has almost become a calling card in a mid-range market where visual gimmicks like flashing lights and racing car decals are frequently featured.

This phone, like the Xperia 10 III (£330), has a tall and bezel-free 21:9 display. The phone is tall and narrow, measuring 153 x 67 x 8.3mm, to accommodate this cinematic canvas.

While the Sony Xperia 5 III is this year’s more affordable alternative to the company’s top-of-the-line model, the Sony Xperia 1 III. This is a slightly compact smartphone, weighing 168g, measuring 8.2mm thick, and standing 157mm tall. By any stretch of the imagination, it is not a small phone, at least not by today’s standards.

Display

Sony Xperia 10 IV

With the Xperia 10 IV’s 6-in OLED display, Sony has taken a much more compact approach than its competitors. It’s comparable in size to the Asus Zenfone 9 and other compact smartphones, making it easy to use with one hand.

The Xperia 10 IV’s 21:9 aspect ratio makes it even more manageable. By extending your holding thumb, you can easily access the far side of the display.

Because of the phone’s height, the thumb cannot reach the top of the display. The good news is that you can access the notifications menu by pulling it down from any part of the main interface.

The Sony Xperia 5 III, on the other hand, has a smaller 6.1-inch OLED screen with the company’s standard 21:9 aspect ratio. The 120Hz refresh rate is carried over from the Xperia 1 III, but the display resolution is Full HD (1080p) rather than 4K. The Xperia 5 III lacks wireless charging and a 3D time-of-flight camera found in its more powerful sibling, and it only has 8GB of RAM rather than 12. Aside from that, their compatibility appears to be strong on paper.

Performance

The Snapdragon 695 processor in the Xperia 10 IV is significantly less powerful than what we’d expect from a £400 phone. This processor is used in devices such as the Poco X4 Pro 5G (which costs $299) and the OnePlus Nord CE 2 Lite (5G) (which costs $279)

In terms of raw performance, it can’t even compete with its mid-tier competitors. With an average multi-core Geekbench 5 score of 1,883, it is roughly 40% slower than the OnePlus Nord 2T, Pixel 6a, and Nothing Phone 1.

The Sony Xperia 5 III is a fast performer for apps and games thanks to its high-end Snapdragon 888 processor and 8GB of RAM. While multitasking on this phone, I was able to play Call of Duty: Mobile for extended periods of time without experiencing any lag or stuttering. Even though the frame rate of the Genshin Impact was noticeably lower, it was still faster than the majority of mobile devices.

When it comes to gaming, Sony’s Game Enhancer software allows you to prioritize performance, graphical fidelity, or battery life. It’s a nice addition that will be useful whether you’re playing games at home or on the go.

Cameras

Sony Xperia 5 III

Cheap smartphones frequently have deceptive triple-camera setups, with depth and macro sensors that offer little practical value but are still commonplace. The Xperia 10 IV, on the other hand, includes a genuine 8MP 2x telephoto lens, an ultra-wide angle camera, and a 12MP wide-angle camera. These cameras aren’t the best available, but they do the job and have a surprising range.

On paper, the Sony Xperia 5 III appears to be a top-tier camera phone. This phone has quickly become my top pick for taking photos this year, thanks in large part to its low price. You can expect similar levels of color accuracy, sharpness, and detail in your wide-angle and telephoto shots because it shares nearly all of the internals of the Xperia 1 III, including the periscope camera with variable focal length. The only thing missing from the Xperia 1 III is a time-of-flight sensor, which could improve low-light focusing, but I couldn’t tell. If you’re looking for high-resolution images, look no further than this Google Drive folder.

Also When photographing landscapes, I’ve discovered that the ultra-wide lens adds a welcome third dimension, allowing me to include more of the scene. Low Light Performance and Extreme High Dynamic Range (HDR) fall short of industry standards. The phone also lacks a multi-frame nighttime shooting mode. Instead, long exposure is used, which often results in blurry images even in good lighting, let alone at night.

Sony Xperia 10 IV Vs Sony Xperia 5 III: Final Verdict

Sony made some unusual decisions with the Xperia 10 IV, which is typical for a mid-range smartphone. This phone, like the Xperia 10 III before it, feels overpriced, thanks to a subpar processor, a mediocre primary camera, and a disappointing 60Hz display.

The Xperia 10 IV, on the other hand, has the best battery life in its class, is exceptionally water-resistant, and comes with a dedicated telephoto camera.

The Sony Xperia 5 III, like its more powerful sibling, the Sony Xperia 7 III, offers excellent photography from the rear camera, a beautiful screen, and a plethora of entertainment options. While it lacks the premium feel of Sony’s Xperia 1 III, the design of this phone is distinctive enough to compete at its price point. Sony has created another high-quality smartphone, albeit at a high cost. Although the Xperia 5 III brings the majority of Sony’s best technology to a lower price point, it does so at the expense of a number of desirable features, making it unlikely to be a runaway success.
