Price and Availability

The Edifier R1280DBs speakers are a good buy at $139, especially when compared to the earlier R1280 series speakers, which are slightly more expensive. Bluetooth connectivity and optical/coaxial inputs cost only $40 more than the R1280Ts, but a wider frequency range, a sub output, and Soundfield Spacializer functionality cost $10 more than the R1280DB.

Design

The aesthetics of the Edifier R1280DBs contribute to their attractiveness. These bookshelf speakers are ideal for those who prefer a more minimalist approach to music listening. Its top, front, and back panels are made of durable grey plastic, which likely contributes to its low price, while the side panels of the Edifier R1280DBs have a beautiful wood grain with a darker, redder pecan finish.

It’s an appealing product even with the replaceable grills covering the front panel.

Edifier chose a darker grey for the R1280DBs, which complements the series’ signature grey on the classic wood finish even better. It’s also available in black, as is the R1280DB, but we prefer the classic colour scheme.

The r1700BT design by Edifiers, on the other hand, is one of our favourites. The fact that the speakers are only available in one colour doesn’t bother us because the contrast between the walnut vinyl and the black body is stunning. We also like some of the unique design choices made here. Edifier claims a 10-degree upward slant to ensure that the sound is focused on the listener.

Features

Simply plug in the provided speaker cable, connect the two speakers, and then connect the active speaker to your TV via any available (and desired) socket or connector. Remember to use the remote to select the appropriate input.

You can also use Bluetooth to connect a mobile device and go wireless. Simply use the remote to change the input of the speakers to Bluetooth and connect your device as you would normally do with Bluetooth.

The Edifier R1700BT, on the other hand, comes with a plastic remote control (which we don’t like) that allows you to easily adjust volume or change inputs. Take care not to let it fall down the back of the sofa.

The R1700BT speakers have two RCA analogue ports on the back of the unit that can be used as TV speakers.

A non-Bluetooth music player can be connected to Edifier using the appropriate wires that come with the device.

Sound Quality

Even if its sleek design, simple setup, numerous input options, and sub-output aren’t enough to persuade you, the Edifier R1280DBs’ outstanding performance will.

Because these bookshelf speakers have a lot of headroom, the audio won’t distort at higher volumes. These headphones are rich and full-bodied because they produce a lot of lower mids as well as a lot of upper ends.

Streaming low-resolution music over Bluetooth is a quick and easy way to listen to music for extended periods of time.

The warm, detailed midrange enhances vocals significantly. The treble edge has slight thinness to it, but not to the point of sharpness (listen to any Kate Bush song).
