The 2021 ASUS ROG Strix G17 is a gaming laptop that saves money by omitting some of the Scar 17 series’ premium features and materials while maintaining performance, display, input devices, and IO. As a result, I believe this will be one of the best-value A-brand performance 17-inch laptops in early 2021. Before making a purchase, make sure you’re aware of all of its peculiarities. However, the Asus TUF Gaming F15 provides everything you need in a great gaming laptop: plenty of power at a reasonable price. If you can look past some of the shortcuts taken to keep the price low, the internals here is worth the asking price.
Asus made some careful calculations and compromises to maximize what the company believes is important to gamers, with a 12th Generation Intel Core processor, RTX 30 series graphics, a massive 16:9 display with up to 360Hz refresh rate, and a powerful on-board battery.

Asus Tuf f15 vs Asus Rog Strix G17: Detailed Analysis
The Asus TUF Gaming F15’s design hasn’t changed much from previous iterations, so its gunmetal grey shell, fake screws on the lid, and chunky, vent-filled chassis will still give you a masculine, gamer-esque look.
That isn’t to say it lacks aesthetic appeal; in fact, it’s a little more refined than its similarly brutish gaming competitors. It’s a contentious fashion that people either love or despise.
When opened, the plastic covering the bottom deck looks and feels cheaper than the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14’s soft-touch options, but this is just one of the ways the laptop saves money without sacrificing performance.
The Asus ROG Strix G17 and Scar 17 both have a full-size 17-inch display and weigh around 6 pounds, making them portable and easy to transport.
The more affordable Strix G17, on the other hand, lacks the Scar’s gimmicks, such as a KeyStone and a removable ROG cap behind the screen, making it more difficult to see the internal components. There is now only a programmable lightbar around the front and sides of the device, no lightbar under the screen, and no RGB-lit logo on the lid, which are all reductions from previous iterations of the device’s RGB elements. This series’ logo is panel-lit, making it impossible to turn off individually.
Two of the three 15.6-inch displays we tested had 300-hertz refresh rates, making them ideal for eSports. A QHD panel, on the other hand, had a refresh rate of 165 hertz.
The TUF Gaming F15 achieved 330 nits of brightness, which is slightly brighter than the 324-nit category average and on par with the ROG Zephyrus G15 (325 nits), but it pales in comparison to the Alienware X14’s 495 nits (400 nits). In contrast to the Scar 17, which has multiple screen options, the 2021 Strix G17 only has a full-high-definition (FHD), 300-hertz (Hz) matte, non-touch display.

With a 1TB PCIe Gen 4 SSD, 16GB DDR4 RAM, and an Intel Core i7-12700K processor, the TUF Gaming F15 can easily handle demanding tasks such as running 30 Chrome tabs, four YouTube videos, an edited multi-layered Photoshop document, and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla in the background.
A Geekbench 5.4 overall performance test revealed that the TUF Gaming F15 easily outperformed the ROG Zephyrus G15, with a multi-core score of 12,705. (the G15 hit 10,017). This score also outperformed the average premium gaming laptop (7,212) and came close to matching the Alienware X14 (13,353). Using our HandBrake benchmark, we were able to transcode a 4K video to 1080p on the F15 in 4 minutes and 49 seconds, which was faster than both the category average (6:38) and the G15’s time of 5 minutes and 42 seconds (6:07). While the Asus 512GB SSD has a large storage capacity, its transfer speed of 607.6 MB/s is slower than the category average and competition. The G15 finished ahead of Alienware at 1,170 MBps, while the X14 reached a maximum of 1,156 MBps.
Meanwhile, the ASUS ROG Strix G17 2021 is outfitted with cutting-edge AMD and Nvidia components. The Ryzen 7 5800H from AMD’s Cezanne Ryzen 5000 platform is a mid-range mobile processor with 8C/16T, a designed TDP of 45W, and slightly lower clocks than the top-end Ryzen 9 5900HX. This series also includes the 5900HX as a premium option in some regions; however, our testing has shown that the extra money isn’t worth it for most buyers.
In our setup, we use the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Laptop chip, which is rated at 115W. It ships with the Turbo profile factory overclocked and can be overclocked to 130W in games that support Nvidia’s Dynamic Boost 2.0 technology. When more processing power is required, this technology can redirect resources from the CPU to the GPU (for instance, in games). The tested BIOS version appears to support resizable BR as well.
In addition, the laptop has two memory DIMM slots and two M.2 SSD slots. Our system came with 32GB of dual-channel RAM and a lightning-fast SK Hynix HFM001TD3JX013N SSD. There is no universal rule regarding whether or not SSD should be included.
By removing two Philips screws and lifting the rear panel, the components are easily accessible. Lifting the bottom panel with care is required because it is wired to the motherboard and supplies power to the front LED strip. They may break off if you pull too hard.

The TUF Gaming F15 may be able to outperform or compete with the more expensive ROG Zephyrus G14 and G15. This is a significant selling point for what is otherwise a fantastic gaming system for at-home or on-the-go entertainment. Despite sharing the same processor, display, and input devices, the ROG Strix G17 is a more affordable performance laptop than Asus‘ premium Scar 17 models. In fact, the Scar 17’s optical-mechanical keyboard is inferior to the series’ standard rubber-dome keyboard.
