Design & Build Quality:

The JBL Boombox and the JBL Boombox 2 have similar design and build quality. They are medium sized portable speakers which sit horizontally. They have a top handle, made of plastic, with a grip pad on top that lets you carry it with one hand. These speakers have a good build quality. There’s a tight fabric that is wrapped around the speaker and it sits on a plastic base. They have sub par controls present on the top of the speaker which include play/pause button, volume button, Bluetooth pairing button and Partyboost button. There are lights present at the bottom which indicates Bluetooth and battery life of the speaker. It doesn’t come with RGB lights.
The Boombox has a compact rugged design and is larger than Boombox 2. It measures 25.45×45.85×19.55 cm while the Boombox 2 measures 48.5×20.1×25.7 cm. Although the Boombox 2 is smaller in size, it weighs more than the Boombox. Its weight is about 5.9kg while the Boombox’s weight is 5.45kg.
The Boombox 2 has a sleek, stylish handle and side flares and comes in two colour variants, black and camo.
Sound Quality:

The JBL Boombox delivers epic sound and bass all day long. The company says that it produces monstrous sound with hard hitting bass as it is incorporated with four active transducers and two JBL bass radiators. It comes with two sound modes, deeper bass and richer sound is produced in indoor mode and expansive sound with strong bass and longer playtime can be switched in outdoor mode.
With JBL signature Pro Sound, the JBL Boombox 2 also produces monstrous sound with strong bass. However you cannot switch between indoor and outdoor modes as this feature is not available.

Battery Life:
The JBL Boombox has a rechargeable battery of 20,000mAh which offers a runtime of 24 hours from a single charge. The Charging time of the speaker is about 6.5 hours.
The JBL Boombox 2 has a rechargeable Li-ion polymer battery of 72.6 Wh which offers upto 24 hours of battery life from a single charge. It takes about 6.5 hours of Charging time to get fully charged from zero.
Both the speakers have built-in Powerbank that lets you charge your device without pausing your party.

Connectivity features:
The JBL Boombox has Bluetooth version 4.2 and has a multi pairing feature that lets you connect up to two devices at a time. The Bluetooth transmitter frequency ranges from 2.402GHz to 2.480GHz while the transmitter power is 0-9dBm.
The JBL Boombox has a JBL Connect+ feature where you can wirelessly connect more than 100 JBL Connect+ enabled speakers.
The JBL Boombox 2 has Bluetooth version 5.1 with multi pairing feature. The speaker is compatible with A2DP 1.3 and AVRCP 1.6 profiles and the Bluetooth frequency ranges from 2.402GHz to 2.480GHz, however the Bluetooth transmitter power is less than equal to 10dBm
The JBL Boombox 2 comes with a Partyboost feature where you can link multiple JBL Partyboost compatible speakers.
Both the speakers have a 3.5mm AUX port and a micro USB port. The JBL Boombox can support voice assistants while it is not supported by the JBL Boombox 2.

Both the speakers have IPX7 Rating therefore you can take them to the beach, pool without worrying about rain, splashes or submersion in the water.

The JBL Boombox is larger but lighter than the Boombox 2. The JBL Boombox has a better sound system as its audio components include 4 transducers and 2 radiators and it comes with two modes where you can switch between them whereas the Boombox 2 also delivers monstrous sound with deep bass and its audio component include JBL massive pro sound. It is more suited for outdoor usage. The Boombox has connect+ feature while the Boombox 2 has Partyboost feature. Both the speakers have the same IPX rating.
However, when it comes to price the JBL Boombox is less expensive than the JBL Boombox 2. According to me, you should go for JBL Boombox as it is less expensive and has an impressive sound profile.
