Despite the fact that the Asus TUF Gaming A15 is an older model, Asus has continually updated the design and boosted the internal power of their most affordable gaming laptop.

This version’s chassis is slimmer and lighter, but it still houses quicker components and more complex display options.

That’s wonderful news, since while the FA507RM, which we tested, costs £1,499 in the UK and $1,499 in the US, the FA507RE, the company’s newest entry-level model, just £1,199 or $1,049. The Asus website suggests an RTX 3050, so we expect more low-cost SKUs in the near future.

Normally, Acer markets its Nitro gaming laptops as low-cost options, but the new Nitro 5 comes with a Ryzen 7 5800H processor and an RTX 3070 graphics card, making it a viable mid-range contender. These components are a touch more expensive than what we’re used to seeing in a Nitro, and the fact that the sole resolution available for the 15-inch devices is 1440p suggests that Acer’s Nitro 5 update is aimed at a broader audience than just the budget-conscious.

Design and Build Quality

The Asus TUF Gaming A15, like the rest of the Asus TUF brand, has a robust, military-inspired design; the moulded lid is held in place by what appears to be riveting, and the device’s bezels and corners contain actual vents and several TUF emblems. While the military’s design is most likely undeveloped, the Asus doesn’t appear to be too bad.

The majority of the TUF’s actual connections are located on its left side. The TUF has two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C ports, one of which supports DisplayPort. On the left side of the gadget, there is also an HDMI output, an audio connector, and an Ethernet jack.

The Acer Nitro 5 hasn’t changed much since the last model we tested, but as the best gaming laptops continue to reduce bezels and enhance their appearance, the Nitro’s design is starting to look out of place. The laptop’s chamfered corners and red accents give it an authoritative appearance, but its fragile plastic shell, which appears to gather fingerprints like a magnet, reveals its low-quality manufacture.

The red fan grill around the back and the logos on the lid lend this shell a toy-like appearance. The keyboard typeface has the same goofy science fiction vibe, with large blocky characters that can be difficult to read when combined with the white borders on the arrow and WASD keys. Even the WASD keys have their own typeface! It’s safe to say that the design of this laptop is a lot to take in aesthetically.

Keyboard and mouse

The Asus TUF Gaming A15’s 15.6 in body accommodates a number pad, and the keyboard features fast, crisp, and silent keys. The keys on the Nitro are more responsive, making them appropriate for casual gaming.

However, this does not mean that the A15’s keyboard is without problems. As one might imagine, more expensive machines have tougher button construction and plastic construction.

The Acer Nitro 5’s keyboard is one of the worst I’ve ever seen on a laptop. Its font appears to be an Arial with a sci-fi Instagram filter applied, and the arrow and WASD keys have a particularly crowded style that is difficult to focus on. The keyboard has a white bottom and a black top, giving it a pop-out effect that some users may find unsettling.

Performance

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 GPU in the Asus TUF Gaming A15 we tested has a strict power restriction of 100W.

AMD’s new Ryzen 7 6800H CPU is a formidable piece of technology with eight processor cores and a top clock speed of 4.7GHz. The remaining technical parameters are understandable: This 1TB SSD is perfect for everyday use, with reading and write speeds of 3,145MB/s and 2,072MB/s, respectively, and 16GB of dual-channel DDR5 RAM.

Our Acer Nitro 5 review unit was outfitted with an AMD Ryzen 7 5800H processor, allowing it to take full advantage of AMD’s powerful productivity features. The Alienware m15 Ryzen Edition R5 configuration we tested included this processor as well, while the ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition went a step further by including a Ryzen 9 5900HX. The only Intel competition we evaluated was the ROG Zephyrus M16, which also had a Core i9-11900H processor and other high-end features.

Only one device outperformed the Acer Nitro 5 in Geekbench, a simulated test of general PC performance. It received an 8,073 multi-core score and a 1,469 single-core score. The Alienware performed the worst when compared to other PCs utilizing the same CPU, with scores of 7288 and 1427, respectively. The Zephyrus handily defeated the Nitro 5 with a final score of 8,495 to 1,636. While not as powerful as the Nitro, the ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition outperformed it in single-core tests, scoring 1,519 points to the Nitro’s 7,746.

Display

The 15.6 IPS display has been improved over last year’s model, with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 and a refresh rate of 165Hz.

The contrast ratio of 1283:1 on the display is sufficient to provide good levels of depth and punch, and the colours are correct. The screen rendered 95.7 per cent of the sRGB gamut with an exceptional delta E of 0.7.

The Acer Nitro 5’s 15.6-inch IPS display features a refresh rate of 165 hertz and a resolution of 2560 by 1440. It’s a shame that this laptop still has a 16:9 aspect ratio, as 16:10 is becoming more common in the laptop business, but the visual quality was outstanding across the board.

The Nitro’s screen reported an average brightness of 271 nits in our tests, the lowest of our test candidates. With a brightness of 328 nits, the Alienware M17x R3 is the brightest laptop we tested; the nearest competition, the ROG Strix, only managed 280 nits. The Zephyrus’s brightness of 479 nits was the brightest of any laptop we tested.

Acer Nitro 5 vs Asus A15 TUF Gaming 15: Final Verdict

Asus will introduce the TUF Gaming A15, which is loaded with features, in 2022. Its AMD processor performs well in terms of productivity and is powerful enough to run standard games on a 1440p display. Under non-gaming conditions, the A15’s battery life is adequate.

The performance, screen, and audio quality of the Acer Nitro 5 are all adequate, making it a solid pick for work (albeit not for pleasure). Despite the fact that the laptop’s keyboard is the most obvious design issue, I was still able to meet my daily word count with it.

Both are low-cost computers, but the A15 is subpar. It features a serviceable gaming keyboard, but its trackpad is mediocre, its networking options are limited, and, if we must be picky, Intel’s newest processors outperform the Ryzen 7 6800H.
